About The Role

Morrison Utility Services are currently looking to recruit a Commercial Director to work in our South Area which covers all current Affinity Water, Anglian Water, Severn Trent Water, Thames Water, Welsh Water Wastewater and HS2 projects. It also includes all works undertaken by Industrial Water Jetting Systems (IWJS). The combined turnover is in the order of £190m per annum with an expectation that this will increase to circa £250m per annum within two years.

Due to a recent reorganisation, an increase in the number of frameworks and contracts covered by the South Area and expected growth, a second Commercial Director is required, reporting directly to the Executive Director. The workload in the South Area will be split between the two Commercial Directors who will work closely together to manage commercial performance across the enlarged area. This is an important leadership role and a critical part of the South Area leadership team. The Commercial Directors will be the Executive Director’s commercial conscience and ensure that targeted margin is achieved, cash is collected promptly and risks are appropriately managed. They will work closely with the Area leadership team and the contract teams to identify and realise opportunities to reduce costs and maximise revenue. They will produce financial and commercial reports, work closely with client representatives and be involved in tender assessments. The new position is a national role with some travelling although overnight stays are likely to be minimal.

As the Commercial Director your duties & responsibilities will be:

  • Ensure targeted margin is achieved and cash is collected promptly
  • Identify and realise opportunities to reduce costs and maximise revenue
  • Produce financial and commercial reports
  • Collate and scrutinise monthly cost value reconciliations (CVRs)
  • Produce and routinely update cash forecasts
  • Work closely and establish strong relationships with Contract Directors and their teams
  • Lead the annual budget process for the Area and any re- forecasting exercises
  • Work closely with IWJS particularly in terms of commercial and financial management/ reporting acting as a principal link between IWJS and the Utilities Division
  • Participate in tender assessments including producing formal detailed reviews of proposed contracts
  • Provide commercial leadership, guidance and support to the Area leadership team and their commercial staff

Skills & Knowledge Requirements


  • Construction Industry experience
  • Significant commercial management experience Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Experience of construction commercial management systems and procedures
  • Detailed understanding of cost value reconciliations
  • Understanding of actual cost collation and comparison to target cost
  • Thorough understanding of sub-contract procurement and administration
  • Comprehensive understanding of forms of contacts and methods of measurement


  • Quantity surveying or commercial management degree or equivalent
  • Accredited NEC Professional
  • Utility or civil engineering contracting experience
  • Experience of high volume, low value maintenance contracts
