About The Role

As the Commercial Manager, you will be part of the Management team reporting to the Commercial Director.

This role can be based anywhere in the UK, national travel will be required including Scotland.

Responsible for the development of commercial relationships with key client accounts. Ensuring that commercial risks and opportunities are communicated and understood by all internal and external parties. To ensure that governance processes are adhered by the wider team. Maintaining commercial control of Direct Labour, Subcontractors, Plant, Material, Consumable and Administration costs. And Project Valuation; cost control and cost management and the validation of progress data in order to ensure accurate reporting.  Development of existing standards and processes identifying efficiencies and ‘value add’ at every opportunity.

As the Commercial Manager your duties & responsibilities will include:

Team Management and Development

  • Manage the recruitment and staffing structure/ utilisation for direct reports.
  • Build team, manage the development of personal plans, establishment of objectives/targets for all direct reports and monitor on an ongoing basis - maintain performance
  • Delegation of appropriate work to all staff, whilst maintaining accountability
  • Encourage and develop a culture of contractual & commercial awareness on all projects.
  • Assist with the development and training of Commercial Practitioners including supervisor / mentor / counsellor role for staff undertaking their APC or equivalent.
  • Ensure the site teams adheres to group procedures and governance.
  • Lead Team Meetings on a regular scheduled basis
  • Contribute to the production of Contracts strategy

Commercial Service Delivery

  • Collate, analysis & challenge Cost/Value Reports and forecasts as required, then implement required actions.
  • Design and implement a commercial strategy for their portfolio and tenders with the assistance of their functional manager
  • Be responsible, where required. To ensure that a review of all the contractual obligations and commercial risks is carried out prior to the submission of tenders.
  • Maximising of cash position, including WIP control, cash flow production & improvement plans for all projects
  • Identification and advice upon of insurance related issues, including PI.
  • Assist in work winning duties as required, including proactive release of team members and attendance at Client Presentations for Tender Interviews
  • Assist in the procurement of PCG’s, Bonds and Warranties.

Corporate Development

  • Attend client engagement events for equivalent level customer feedback, alignment, and future pipeline of work.
  • Assist in preparation, development, and implementation of new Group Commercial Procedures.
  • Carry out commercial audits on other Areas as and when required.
  • Assist in Functional leadership, bringing best practice into the business, involvement in Business Improvement Initiatives.

Skills & Knowledge Requirements

  • Significant experience in a similar role
  • Preferably Degree qualified in Quantity Surveying or other relevant business discipline
  • Non degree holders should have a demonstrable record of success with extensive experience in similar roles
  • Good verbal and written communication skills
  • Excellent numeracy skills
  • Use of Microsoft Office applications – High level knowledge of Excel
  • Accurate and timely provision of information
  • Demonstrate experience working under NEC Contracts and in particular Option A, C and E
  • Preferable use of online cost and value software (such as Oracle)
  • Experience of managing teams, implementing structure, training plans etc.
  • Driving Licence
